Saturday, November 05, 2005Rand vs. Kant: Round 837,492Kantians and "Objectivists" (Randians is a better term). The two hate eachother, and any talk about Aristotlean philosophy around one camp or the other inevitably draws attacks. If defending ol' Aristotle, you must be a "randroid" or some other pejorative. Leonard Peikoff takes his swipe at Kantian philosophy in The Omninous Parallels. I may just go out and pick up the book, but on a larger theme I've never truly understood why Kantians and Randians don't just disagree, but disagree so fiercely. The book seems to incorrectly try to peg Kantian philosophy and epistemology for the rise of Nazi Germany, and argues that America (?) is on a similar path and can save itself only through a convenient and clear philosophical alternative -- which just so happens to be Ayn Rand. Clear problems evolve when you consider that Heidegger was the primary philosopher of National Socialism in the 1930's, and it was Neitzche that provided the "will to power" ethic. Dasein, not the categorical imperative, was the order of the day. In short, I'm raisin' eyebrows Tim Kaine style. Philosophical musings on a Saturday morning (before an election).
