FLS: Your editorial took a cheap shot at Spotsy Republicans

Sunday's Free Lance-Star took the opportunity to compare Spotsylvania Republicans to the Khmer Rouge. My response was printed in today's paper:

***

Spotsylvania Republicans include members of all races, religions, ethnicities, cultures and opinions. We share one premise: that of limited government and a better way.

Not everyone shares that opinion, to be sure, but for these individuals to compare Republicans to one of the most brutal regimes in modern history belittles the serious nature of what the Khmer Rouge did to the people of Cambodia ["Mr. Hill's indictment," Feb. 26].

The Khmer Rouge were responsible for the deaths of 1.7 million Cambodians during their reign of terror.

Malnutrition was rampant. Medicines were rejected in favor of local traditions, resulting in the unnecessary deaths of thousands.

Children were forcibly separated from their parents and turned into soldiers. Religious institutions, schools, hospitals, banks, family: All were banned.

Being of a different ethnicity, espousing an idea, expressing religious sentiment, or being educated all meant an arbitrary death at the hands of the Khmer Rouge.

To even show sympathy for those sent to the "killing fields" was to merit death at the hands of the butchers of Cambodia.

The Free Lance-Star should be above this kind of hyperbolic rhetoric. This only cheapens political discourse and dishonors the memory of those who suffered at the hands of the Khmer.

How was this egregious and offensive remark missed?

Spotsylvania Republicans will continue to hold our elected officials accountable to the principles of limited and ethical government, and are quite happy to stay above the current legal debacles made manifest by our elected officials and our press.

Shaun Kenney is chairman of the Spotsylvania Republican Committee.

What's the real question here?

Why would they be motivated to do such an editorial?

Why have I lost faith in the republicans?

Why does it appear they stand only for big business, greed, and corruption?

How many people are dying and suffering because of their actions, policies, beliefs, lies, etc.?

Pol Pot killed people for wearing glasses too - a sign of weakness and imperfection.

Tom, the FLS wrote that editorial as a pure political ploy in an attempt to defend Hill's ILLEGAL actions. God forbid the Spotsy County GOP ask for accountability of government.

Jason,

I think you'll find I'm one of the biggest supporters of outing illegal activity and "Crooks and Liars". I would like to see Shaun run for office again and win. He appears to have both intelligence and integrity.

However, how can you ignore McDonnels recent decision to come out in favor of discrimination, Reid not being charged for the firearm incident, allowing the extreme and excessive gifts by the Sheriff's Assc (majority republican) for hunting trips, etc.
Not to mention the outrageous statements by CA Neely about the sex bust! Why did three deputies have to have orgasams before they could figure out "MIMI" was doing something illegal?

I'll add my own personal experience with the lack of help and concern by "Buck" a Lt. in the Spotsylvania Sheriff's office. When I came to the sheriff for help picking up a felon with 2 outstanding felony warrants, "I" had tracked down to Spotsylvania county near the courthouse. His response to me was they couldn't do anything until the Caroline Sheriff's office asked them to. (this is the old Sheriff's office under Homer Johnson). I then got the State Police involved and the felon Rodney O'Neal Braxton, who had a record in Spotsylvania, was convicted, in Caroline and Henrico. His DNA then came up positive for a rape in Fredericksburg. His trial for the rape is starting this month.

I think the GOP should do a better job of policing their members before pointing the finger at others!

I agree wholeheartedly when it comes to expecting more out of our public officials. All of 'em!

Tom makes the right points: we should collectively expect more of the party that (supposedly) extolls the virtues of good government, as opposed to more government being good.

Thanks for the kind words, Tom.
