What he did that was good is go positive while negatives were being hammered against his opponent by the press.
Allen will now own this week, kick a tour off, etc. What does Webb do in response? Attack more? Wait? It's a lost week for Webb in the press.

And no, there will be no cruising to victory.
Still, this is a perfectly executed move on Allen's part, and precisely what Webb's campaign should have done in the not one but two times they had Allen on the ropes.
Now Webb is on the ropes and the uppercut has landed. Base hit, ball rolls out, next batter...

And Miller would not have made the mistake of attacking Allen on his heritage, nor could he be pinned on such issues as women in the military, racism, etc.

- I don't know about the comment that "no one saw it." He was on in Roanoke, right after Jeopardy. Old people (I'm almost there) religiously watch Wheel and then Jeopardy.
Who is THE most dependable voting bloc there is? Old people. If not, why is AARP the most feared special interest? Don't say it's the NRA. They'd rather take my guns than even talk about SS reform.
I thought it was a good message about what he has done for Virginia in the past. Contrary to the only commercial that I have seen for Webb, I don't expect my Senator to personally get us out of Iraq.

- What was the point of having Mrs. Allen in the commerical? She didn't say anything. She just looked pretty and smiled. She seemed to be just another prop, like the football helmet.

Also, whenever a man is being attacked, it's best to show up with your wife. It's comforting to people to see.
I think Hillary referred to this derisively as "standing by your man", although later she did just that and saved Bill's presidential run.

Of course, knowing Dick Wadhams -- I'm not too surprised. He's the best political strategist in the U.S. Hands down.
When it comes down to issues, Webb doesn't have a chance in this race. Virginians are conservative and vigorously support the war on terror.
Bringing the debate back to the issues has GOT to be Allen's focus. Even though the liberal media will make that impossible, every attempt on his part to bring the focus back to the issues will win him points in the public eye.

- I don't know where James is going with the whole no one saw this ad. Clearly he did, unless he is now claiming he is a no one. I saw it. Mason Conservative saw it. Obviously a lot of bloggers saw it. I think what we have here is some wishful thinking on the part of James.
As for the elderly, they will like what was said by Allen. I think it was good that Allen said lets get this race focused on the issues. In effect, he dared Webb to debate him in a real debate on the issues, without any questions that bring up controversies.
Now it is time to see if webb will step up to the plate. Also, I have YET to see a single Webb ad.

- So, according to Allen, “Virginians expect to hear us address the real issues”. OK, so then why did I wake up today to an Allen ad attacking Jim Webb's character? Is he serious? Or is he just hoping we'll give him a pass because the bad ol' media have been so unfair to him?

Will Allen show up? Will he bring the new, improved, friendlier George Allen? Will he stay on the issues? Do you really think he wanted a campaign focused on issues?
Don't be fooled. Allen's camp was rolling the negative personal attacks in June. Remember "fiction writer"?
Seriously, when Allen looked into that camera in Breaks, he was trying to smear a SW VA Native (!) by saying he had never been to that part of the state!
Allen wants a campaign on issues? Puh-leeze! He wants us to stop talking about what a lying bigot he is.

- Jim Webb is a fiction writer. He wrote a fiction book. What would that make him? Yes he is an author, but an author of fiction. As for the ads you saw, I bet it was already set in motion before Allen did the two minute spot.

- Peter, Webb claims he wants to talk about the issues so why doesn't he? His site has absolutely no real content on what he would do as a Senator. And every time an opportunity to talk about the issues arises his campaign runs away from it and screams that Allen's a bigot. Here's an opportunity to talk issues that matter and what are the Dems doing? Saying he's avoiding the non-issues that Webb himself has said he doesn't want to address. Way to avoid what's important.

- Also, what exactly is Allen's connection with the Redskins? Is there some sort of genetic linkage? It would be bad enough to run on daddy's coattails if daddy were actually a politician (or did anything of note really), but we're talking about a football coach from a long time ago. Can GA really take credit for GA, Sr's accomplishments?
Cherishing your dead father's memory is sacred and private - GA used it as a sales technique, which is pretty tacky.

- Nice try, BDM. Allen has no intention of staying positive. See the Times Dispatch article today titled "Allen to stay on the attack"
All of his lamentations about negative attacks are just crocodile tears. He doesn't have a record as Senator except some bills he co-sponsored which haven't passed, a war that's an unmitigated disaster, an exploding federal deficit, etc. All he has is negative attacks, so it's what we'll see from him from now on.

Webb doesn't think it's a character thing, he thinks it's a policy issue. Saying Webb supported a particular policy, and that policy hurt women, is not an "attack on his character", unless you attribute every incorrect position on an issue as based on a character flaw.
Now, certainly some will see a flawed character in the MANNER in which Webb addressed the issue -- but that's just how Webb chose to write, and you can't fault Allen for how Webb himself framed his issue about women not being able to fight.
Now, Webb may have changed, and certainly Webb could put out a commercial saying what his position is TODAY on the issue. Instead, he's running a commercial about how, apparently in spite of his deeply held beliefs that Webb stands by having, he still helped women get into good jobs in the military.
So that's an issue response, not a character response.
It's hard to imagine an Ad questioning an opponent's position which won't be perceived as a personal attack -- but we are supposed to question people on positions they have taken, and with Webb there are so few public positions he has taken that you almost have to go back to the 80s.
After all, his Biography includes his service in the Reagan administration, so he invited us to examine that part of his record.
