Goodbye, Larry.
Walking out the door at The Free Lance-Star isn’t easy. I grew up reading this newspaper, and I realized early on how important it is for a community to have a good one. The Free Lance-Star is an institution I have always admired, and in 32 years there has not been a workday I didn’t want to be here. It has been a privilege to help the staff and owners of this newspaper serve the people of the Fredericksburg area.
I could not have carried out my various job roles–16 years as a reporter, two years on the city desk, 10 years as editorial-page editor and four years as a columnist–if literally tens of thousands of people along the way had not graciously consented to interviews, returned my telephone calls, suggested ideas, engaged me in spirited debate, and offered praise and constructive criticism.
My sincere thanks goes out to each of you.
Larry Evans is mostly noted for his liberal stewardship over the editorial page of the FLS for a number of years, including a highly frustrating quota system for which letters were printed (one liberal, one conservative, no matter how many conservatives wrote). Good luck.
